No longer in Sydney's shadow, the second largest city of New South Wales has been picked by the prestigious global travel publishing giant Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2011.
Newcastle came in at number nine on the list of Top 10 Cities 2011, published in Lonely Planet's annual Best in Travel 2011 book released today. According to Lonely Planet, Newcastle has "a unique blend of imagination, sophistication and laidback surf culture."
Okay, y'all, who's visiting first?

I will if I can sleep on your couch.
Love to, but there's this whole "other side of the freakin' planet" thing going on.
I lived and worked there back in 2004, and I visited a couple of weeks ago.The mall is still not, ahem, top 10, not even top 10000, in the world LOL.But yeah, nice place,I'm considering going back to work at John Hunter for a while.
The mall has become a disaster, and there's no real prospect of fixing it. I think the (rather nominal) CBD will increasingly become a cluster of beach/tourist/high-end residential precincts, and probably still with education, legal, and government precincts, while the real commercial centres of the city will continue to shift elsewhere within the suburban sprawl. And the main hospital is already John Hunter with the old Newcastle Hospital no longer there.
The whole Hunter Valley/Lake Macquarie/Nelson Bay region is going through a big transition with no real end in sight. Still, it's come along in a lot of ways since I was a kid.
