Hadn't you heard? Russell is too independent to join someone else's church.
My bet is the book contract will lead to a series of best-selling scifi stories about mysterious supernatural beings (call them Ethans) who have appointed him as their Supreme Leader on Earth. He will attract hordes of followers who will pay to become Ethans eventually as promised, despite the (slight) improbability of the various doctrines promulgated by what has become the new church. Russell will grow immensely rich as a result.
