I dunno: my cats have the mysterious ability to cause me to remain seated in a chair, even against my will, such as when I have important things to do, or need to go to the bathroom. All they have to do is jump into my lap, curl up, and purr.
Don't underestimate the hypnotic powers of them kitties.

I agree with Eamon. It's the purring. Oh and the rhythmic softening up of your lap with alternating paws as they perform their hypnotic dance.
