There will always be background assumptions that have not been subjected to empirical scrutiny. Nothing mystical about that, just commonplace. But religious dogma switches the order of the quantifiers from "for any context, there is something that is unexamined" to "there is something, that in every context is unexamined."Dnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24761391.post-21233405825182118462009-05-20T11:11:39.770+10:002009-05-20T11:11:39.770+10:00"I've failed 473 times in a row in my attempts to ..."I've failed 473 times in a row in my attempts to walk through walls. Both theists and atheists make this leap of faith implicitly, when they use the products of science. They confidently board an airplane, so they accept the scientists' faith.<br /><br />However, many theists are selective in accepting that faith: if they reject evolution, they reject the same faith that brought them the airplane, so they're being inconsistent. They are false."<br /><br />And one reason we know this - one source of evidence for this claim - is the fact that Richard Evans checked some of David Irving's citations and found pervasive systematic falsification of evidence. This would never have been known if Irving hadn't sued Deborah Lipstadt for libel. It took a huge amount of time and effort to check the citations (in archives, government records etc) and the work wouldn't have been done if Irving hadn't sued.Ophelia Bensonhttp://www.butterfliesandwheels.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24761391.post-55982548927885110932009-05-20T02:03:00.000+10:002009-05-20T02:03:00.000+10:00I wanna see Stanley Fish try to argue his way out ...I wanna see Stanley Fish try to argue his way out of a traffic ticket by disputing the cop's epistemological foundations.Blake Staceyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13977394981287067289noreply@blogger.com
